What tone is, and what changes it

Tone is the attitude your writing conveys to the reader: polite or blunt, sure or unsure, warm or distant. Readers pick it up from small choices more than from the message itself:

Checking the tone of an email

Emails are where tone goes wrong most often, because the reader can’t hear your voice.
