What a conclusion paragraph should do

  1. Restate the thesis in fresh words, not a copy of your introduction.
  2. Synthesise the main points: show how they fit together rather than listing them again.
  3. End with significance: why the argument matters, what should happen next, or a question the reader keeps thinking about.

Writing centres such as the UNC Writing Center warn against three habits: starting with “In conclusion”, adding a brand-new argument, and apologising for the essay. The generator is told to avoid all three.

Three styles

  • Summarising: the safe default for expository and analytical essays.
  • Call to action: for persuasive essays; ends with what the reader or decision-maker should do.
  • Reflective: for personal and narrative essays; ends with what you learned.

Frequently asked questions

How do you start a conclusion paragraph?

Open by restating your thesis in new words, for example “Free buses would make cities cleaner and fairer,” instead of “In conclusion, this essay showed…”. A transition such as “Ultimately” or “Taken together” also works.

How long should a conclusion be?

Roughly the same length as your introduction: often 5–10% of the essay, so about 80–150 words for a 1,000–1,500-word essay.

Can I paste just bullet points?

Yes. A thesis plus your main points is enough. Pasting the full essay gives the most accurate wording.

Should a conclusion include new information?

No. Bring together what you already argued; a new point belongs in a body paragraph.

Is it free?

Yes, free with no signup.
