What plain language means
Plain language is writing your reader can understand the first time they read it. The U.S. Federal Plain Language Guidelines recommend short sentences, active voice, common words, and “you” to address the reader. The simplifier applies those rules while keeping precise terms that have no simpler equivalent.

What reading level should I aim for?
For the general public, around grade 8 (Flesch Reading Ease 60–70) is a common target. Health information is often written at grade 6 or below.

The simplifier keeps every important fact, but simpler wording can lose nuance. Check that key qualifications such as “usually” or “in most cases” survived.
