How does the sentence counter decide where a sentence ends?
A sentence ends at a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis followed by a space. Common abbreviations such as Mr., Dr., e.g. and i.e. and single initials are not treated as sentence ends.
What is a good average sentence length?
Plain-language guides commonly suggest an average of 15–20 words per sentence. The UK Government Digital Service recommends keeping sentences to about 25 words at most for web content.
Why does my count differ from Word?
Tools treat abbreviations, headings without punctuation and bullet lists differently. A heading or list item with no full stop counts as part of the next sentence here.
